Teachers continually seek out ways to increase student achievement by understanding their students better and improving their instructional techniques. Within the past decade, information from the emerging field of neuroscience has found its way into education, providing a scientific explanation for many standard learning theories as well as a new set of instructional techniques based on knowledge of how the brain learns best. The purpose of this course is to provide teachers with a working knowledge of brain physiology, including an understanding of the way the brain processes information during sensory reception, when emotions are invoked, and when engaged in survival, attention, problem-solving, spoken and written language, and the artistic endeavors. Content of the course, which is based on the work of Renate and Geoffrey Caine, Candace Pert, David Sousa, Robert Sylwester, Eric Jensen, and Marian Diamond, among others, will address developmental issues that affect learning; how information is processed into short-term, working, and long-term memory; elements of a brain-compatible classroom; and instructional strategies to maximize the brain’s ability to learn. The content is taught using brain-compatible instructional strategies so that as teachers are learning what brain-compatible learning is about, they are also experiencing its benefits. In addition, the course provides opportunities to practice using brain-compatible instructional strategies, to analyze current practices in light of this information, and to integrate age- and discipline-specific strategies into everyday lesson planning. This highly experiential course is intended for K-12 teachers who are interested in learning to apply brain-compatible technique in their own classrooms.
This course meets elements of all five NBPTS core standards.
